thesis

Evolution games either use authored parts (Spore's editor) or simple genomes (Species, The Bibites). Research on Lenia, Flow-Lenia, neural cellular automata, and foundation-model-guided search for artificial life (ASAL, 2024) produced substrates where lifelike, open-ended forms emerge and tools that find interesting ones automatically. A game can use those tools as a camera operator over an evolving world, surfacing novelty to the player.

design sketch

The player tunes environment parameters and selection pressures for a continuous artificial-life world. An automated discovery system scans the running world for novel forms and behaviors and bookmarks them; the player curates, names, and transplants organisms between worlds and shares discoveries.

validation experiment

Run a Flow-Lenia world on a consumer GPU with an automated novelty detector for 8 hours and have players rate bookmarked discoveries against random snapshots. Success: bookmarked organisms rated more interesting in at least 75 percent of pairwise comparisons.

key risks

  • Open-ended substrates often stagnate or explode.
  • Players may not read abstract organisms as creatures.
  • GPU requirements.

falsifiable prediction

by 2029-12-31

A game built on a continuous artificial-life substrate (Lenia family or neural cellular automata) will reach 1,000 Steam user reviews.

Title released after 2026-10-24; its Steam page or developer documentation describes a Lenia-family or neural cellular automaton substrate, and it has at least 1,000 Steam user reviews by the resolve date.
